History. The program has its origins in the non-NIH funded MD-PhD training offered at the nation's research-centric medical schools. The first dual-degree program began at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1956. Other prominent medical schools quickly followed this example and developed integrated MD-PhD training structures.

MD-PhD dual degree training, which provides scientific training earlier in the training sequence, represents another approach. Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) The mission of our MSTP is to train a diverse and creative cadre of physician-scientists who will become leaders in their chosen fields of research, develop new knowledge and translate it to enhance clinical practice.Barney Graham, M.D., Ph.D., is the Deputy Director of the Vaccine Research Center and the Chief of the Viral Pathogenesis Laboratory (VPL) and the VPL Translational Science Core (VPTS). The goal of the VPL is to better understand basic aspects of viral pathogenesis and apply that knowledge toward development of safer and more effective vaccines.

The Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Fellowship (F30) is intended to enhance research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students who are matriculated in a combined MD-PhD training program and plan to pursue careers as physician-scientists. “The three F30 fellowships represent a significant achievement for the students as well as for our MD-PhD training.
